Oak Cliff: historic, independent, and on the rise
  • Oak Cliff began in 1887 when developers Thomas Marsalis and John Armstrong built an elite resort town west of the Trinity; it incorporated as its own city in 1890 and was annexed to Dallas in 1903.
  • Lake Cliff opened in 1906 as an amusement park billed at the time as 'the Southwest's Greatest Playground,' with a 2,500-seat theater, an 18,000-square-foot roller-skating rink, and a roller coaster, before the City of Dallas turned the grounds into a public park in 1914.
  • Bishop Arts grew up as 1920s warehouses and shops; by the 1930s the Davis Street trolley stop was the busiest in Dallas.
  • The district declined from the mid-1960s into the early 1980s as malls rose and Oak Cliff's streetcar system was removed.
  • In fall 1984, developer Jim Lake began buying and restoring the storefronts, branding the 'Bishop Arts District,' now home to 60+ independent businesses, with a stretch on the National Register.
  • The surrounding Kessler and Lake Cliff areas (Kessler named for City Beautiful planner George Kessler) wind through hilly, tree-lined terrain, a contrast to downtown’s flat grid.

Rail, bus & highways

Dallas Streetcar

The Dallas Streetcar runs 5:30 a.m.–midnight every day, every ~20 minutes, over a 2.45-mile route between the Bishop Arts District and downtown's Union Station, crossing the Trinity on the Houston Street Viaduct. Stops at Oakenwald (by Lake Cliff Park), Beckley (Methodist Dallas Medical Center), and 6th Street (edge of Bishop Arts) sit right in the Bishop Ridge area. Fare is $1 one-way, or any valid DART pass.

DART Rail & Regional Trains

At Union Station, the streetcar meets DART light rail (Red, Blue, Green, Orange lines through downtown), the Trinity Railway Express to Fort Worth, and Amtrak, reaching Uptown, the airport line, and the wider region without a car.

Highways

I-30 along the north edge runs east–west toward downtown, Arlington, and Fort Worth; I-35E along the east side heads north to the Medical District, Love Field, and Stemmons, and south toward Austin.
